I am honored to finally be able to say that I am the new national ambassador for the Orange The World campaign organised by UN Women NL!!!! Orange the World is an international campaign for the elimination of violence against women and girls. The campaign starts on November 25th and will last for 16 days. During these 16 days there will be many events organised worldwide. The main purpose is to raise awareness of the fact that 1 in every 3 women is subject to rape, domestic violence, psychological violence, exploitation or other forms of violence.
THIS IS SHOCKING AND HAS TO STOP!
Why am I involved?
Violence against women and girls is one of the most widespread, persistent and devastating human rights violations in our world today and is a threat to millions of girls and women online and offline. It affects women regardless of their age, background, or level of education.
I am one of those women. During my career I have been sexually harassed and assaulted. I was afraid to speak up and lose my job or worse. However, together with the amazing support of UN Women NL I’ve decided to speak up and become a voice for all the millions of women and girls who can’t. I know too many women and girls who are survivors of violence in many forms and this has too stop! Enough is enough!
Who is UN WOMEN?
For those of you who don’t know of UN Women yet, let me shortly explain. UN Women is part of the United Nations and dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women. It’s the global organisation that fights for the rights and needs of women and girls.
UN Women supports UN Member States as they set global standards for achieving gender equality, and works with governments and civil society to design laws, policies, programmes and services needed to ensure that the standards are effectively implemented and truly benefit women and girls worldwide.
The Netherlands are also a UN Member State and the wonderful people at the UN Women NL headquarters in The Hague stand up daily for women rights here in The Netherlands too. Click here to read more about UN Women NL.
Orange The World Campaign
November 25th is the ‘International Day for the Elimination of Violence against women’. As I mentioned before this will also be the start of the Orange The World Campaign. The campaign will last for 16 days. UN Women NL organises the campaign for The Netherlands. During these 16 days UN Women NL will campaign together with ministries, provinces, social organisations and hopefully YOU to raise awareness.
There will be many events organised and many cities will cover a building, bridge, fountain or other objects in orange to show support for violence against women.
